| To quote Phil Arnot, "Ladder Lake is the jewel of the Black Divide. Years ago a very crude horse trail brought fishing parties up from the middle fork of the Kings river". Perhaps there is a trace of this trail still evident, but in my experience looking for it is just going to get you into a tangle of manzanita. I recommend crossing the Kings just north of where the Ladder Lake outlet stream enters the Kings. From here it is possible to work up to a sparsely ducked route that follows the north side of this stream until you have reached the lodgepole forest. Then continue traveling west until you reach a very obvious southwesterly trending chute which leads to north west shore of Ladder Lake. This chute is surprisingly easy climbing. Bishop pass is the low point in the distance. |
