Looking northwest from the top of Baxter Pass

Baxter Pass is the first non cross-country pass over the Sierra crest north of Kersarge Pass. The area near the top of the pass is a moonscape of colorful rocks. For the most part this is unmaintained trail on both the park (west) and national forest (east) sides of the crest. The lower portion of the east side trail was damaged in the flooding of July 2008 and many of the oak trees were burned in the fire of 2007.

This trail passes through one of the sierra Big Horn sheep reserves.
